Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether the students' attitudes towards older people predict their perceptions of working with the said population. The respondents in the study consisted of 357 students enrolled in Cebu Doctors' University College of Rehabilitative Sciences (CDU-CRS) for the Second Semester of the Academic Year 2018-2019. They were selected using a stratified random sampling method with proportional allocation. The Kogan's Attitude towards Older People Scale (KOPS) (Kogan, 1961) and the revised Students' Perceptions of Working with Older People Scale (SPWOP) (Nolan, M., Davies, Brown, Keady, & Nolan, 2002) were used to gather data. KOPS is a 34-item questionnaire which contained 6-point Likert type scale, while SPWOP is a 13-item questionnaire with a 5-point Likert type scale.
Results showed that majority of the student respondents had positive attitudes towards older people (291, 81.5%) and perceptions of working with the said population (318, 89.1%). Using a simple linear regression analysis method, a moderate correlation between the respondents' attitudes towards older people and their perceptions in working with the said population (r=.460, p <.001) was likewise found. Moreover, attitudes towards older people were found to be a predictor of perceptions with working with the said population (β = .277, p <.001, R2=.24).
In conclusion, it was found that attitudes towards older people predict perceptions of working with the said population among the CDU- CRS students for the Second Semester of the Academic Year 2018-2019. The researchers respectfully recommended the course facilitators and the College of Rehabilitative Sciences to organize more activities such as outreach programs and to provide additional courses that cater to the management of older people. This will expose the students more to older people and will encourage the maintenance of positive attitudes and change the negative ones. Moreover, it is likewise recommended for the Commission on Higher Education to utilize this data as a basis to uphold policies that promote positive attitudes towards older people. For future researchers, it is recommended to use this study as a baseline in creating more studies such as determining other factors that may affect the students' perceptions of working with the said population. In addition, it is likewise recommended to consider conducting a prospective study to determine how the attitudes and perceptions of students affect their work as future professionals.
