Taekwondo is a sport that highly incorporates the involvement of the Hamstring Muscle group evident in repetitive burst, high kicks required in the sport. Lack of hamstring flexibility and isokinetic strength in taekwondo athletes predisposes them to hamstring injuries especially upon sudden change of movement. Open kinematic chain exercise is a method in which the distal segment of the extremity is free to move in space while Closed Kinematic Chain exercise is performed where the extremity is fixed in space and cannot move. The aim of this study was to determine the acute effects of kinematic chain exercises on hamstring flexibility and isokinetic strength among taekwondo players in the University of San Carlos, the University of San Jose - Recoletos and the University of Cebu. This is to address hamstring strain common to taekwondo players with a unified and holistic warm-up protocol. Each group was randomly assigned to either Closed Kinematic Chain (OKC Group = 12), Open Kinematic Chain (CKC Group = 12) and Static Stretching (Control Group = 12). Pre-screening was done for all groups using the Straight Leg Raise (SLR). Subjects with an SLR angle of >80 degrees were included in the study as well as subjects with no injuries. Hamstring flexibility was assessed using the sit-and-reach assessment, while Isokinetic Strength was assessed using the handheld dynamometer.

Before the performance of the exercises, pre-test measurements for hamstrings flexibility for the Open Kinematic Chain, Close Kinematic Chain and Static Stretching group were as follows: 11.51±2.36 (Good), 14.23±2.71 (Very Good) and 13.73±2.45 (Very Good). While the pre-test measurements for isokinetic strength were at 30.30±5.94 (Good Minus), 47.08±18.54 (Good), and 41.88±9.76 (Good minus) for the three groups respectively. After performing the exercises, post-test measurements for flexibility were then measured for the three (3) groups and was recorded as 12.31±1.98 (Good), 15.17±2.46 (Excellent), and 13.74±2.34 (Very Good) respectively. The results showed that there were no significant differences for the Flexibility. However, for the Isokinetic Strength, only the Static Stretching group had a decreased post value of 33.11±6.54 (Good minus) and produced a significant difference between pre-test and post-test at .008 level of significance, t(11) = -.104, p>.008, t(11)=-1.129, p>.008, and t(11) = -3.398, p>.008, respectively.

The study concluded that Open and Close Kinematic Chain Exercises had no acute effect on hamstrings flexibility and isokinetic strength. The Researchers recommend extended exercise period exercise to produce a significant acute effect on hamstring flexibility and isokinetic strength.
