The antibacterial potential of lemon (Citrus limon) peel extract on Escherichia coli (ATCC # 25922).

Abstract

   The study was conducted to determine the antibacterial potential of lemon peel (Citrus limon) extract by measuring the zone of inhibition in three different concentrations of 25%, 50% and 100% against Escherichia coli (ATCC no. 25922). One-way ANOVA was the statistical treatment used. The positive control used was Ofloxacin paper discs while the negative control was 95% ethanol. Each experimental and control groups were allocated with five petri dishes streaked with Escherichia coli (ATCC no. 25922), and five paper discs dipped in the solutions of the experimental and control groups were used for treatment. After 24 hours of incubation at 37 degrees Celsius, all of the zones of inhibition were subject to measurement and the results were tabulated. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD).


   The results of the experiment are as follows: for the 25% and 50% concentrations no zone of inhibition was formed while the 100% concentration showed a zone of inhibition ranging from 7mm to 9mm. The 95% ethanol did not show any Zone of Inhibition, but the Ofloxacin successfully showed zones of inhibition ranging from 25mm to 33mm. The extract was not able to reach the required zone of inhibition in the Kirby Bauer Standard Chart, which has a resistant zone of inhibition of 15mm and a susceptible zone of inhibition of 21mm. Therefore, Escherichia coli is not susceptible to Citrus limon peel extract. One-Way ANOVA revealed that on average, the log zone of inhibition exhibited by the Ofloxacin treatment group was significantly bigger compared with the 100% lemon peel extract, F(1,48) = 2632.469, p < .05.


   In conclusion, the result showed that the lemon peel extract does not have antibacterial effect on E. coli (ATCC no. 25922). Preparatory measures, specifically sun drying of the lemon peels, for the experiment may have an effect on the results. Indoor drying is recommended instead of sun drying to avoid reduction of the antibacterial potential of the peel.
