This study was conducted to determine the effect of Syzygium cumini seed powder as a coagulant in the purification of water contaminated with the gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. This study was aimed to determine the effect of Syzygium cumini seed powder in reducing the turbidity of water samples contaminated with Escherichia coli by coagulating bacterial contaminants. Three different concentrations of the Syzygium cumini seed powder (5mg, 10mg and 20mg), as well as two positive control groups of aluminum sulfate at 100mg/L and 200mg/L, were used to treat water samples contaminated with Escherichia coli. The turbidity after treatment was collected after one hour of letting the water samples sit by using a turbidimeter.

One-Way ANOVA revealed that a significant difference in the turbidity (NTU) of water samples treated with aluminum sulfate as the positive control and Syzygium cumini seed powder treatment groups exists at a 0.05 level of significance, F(4,20) = 20.335, p < .05. Results showed that water samples treated with 20mg Syzygium cumini seed powder had a significantly lower turbidity with a mean ± SD of 0.19±0.05 NTU in comparison to those treated with 5mg Syzygium cumini seed powder (0.42±0.09 NTU) and 10mg Syzygium cumini seed powder (0.36±0.11 NTU). It was also found that the mean ± SD turbidity of samples treated with 20mg Syzygium cumini seed powder was not significantly different to those treated with 10ml Aluminum sulfate (0.20±0.08 NTU).

Among the different concentrations of Syzygium cumini seed powder, only 20mg of the seed powder was able to reduce the turbidity of the water sample to that which meets the EPA standard for drinking water. This study may serve as a reference for future researchers. It is therefore recommended that future studies test the extent of Syzygium cumini seed powder as a coagulant for bacteria and evaluate its safety for human use as a cheaper alternative to commercial water coagulants.
