Effect of zumba toning on muscular endurance of detrained athletes in the College of Rehabilitative Sciences in Cebu Doctors' University.

Abstract

  This study was designed to determine the effect of Zumba Toning on muscular endurance among detrained athletes in the College of Rehabilitative Sciences in Cebu Doctors' University with Academic Year of 2018-2019. The study utilized a randomized pre-test and post-test experimental design. The study was conducted at 1 Dr. P.V. Larrazabal Jr. Avenue North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City, Cebu. The rooms used for the study were 311, 406, and 408 and during the Holidays, the implementation proper was transferred to Abellana Sports Complex due to unavailability of the school premises. Fourteen (14) detrained athletes were randomly assigned into the experimental and control group with seven (7) subjects per group. The study included detrained athletes ages 20-29 years old participating in the following sports that require upper body strength and endurance: volleyball, basketball, badminton, swimming and table tennis. Athletes who stopped training for more than eight (8) weeks, considered detrained on the given pre-survey questionnaire, and obtained a grade of Below Average to Very Poor using the Standard Push-Up Test were included. Zumba Toning session was implemented four (4) times per week for four (4) weeks. The study utilized Push-up Test in measuring the muscular endurance of the subjects. The test measured the number of push-ups the subject can perform within one (1) minute.


  Pre-exercise number of push-up in the control group was 6.75+2.22 while in the experimental group was 9.20+5.93. After the four (4) week intervention, post-exercise number of push-up in the control group was 17.25+1.89 and the experimental group was 21.80+8.26. Paired t-test on the number of push-up showed a mean difference of 10.50 (t=5.422, p=.012) on the control group and 12.60 (t=6.105, p=.004) on the experimental group. The difference in the number of push-up for both groups were significant at .05 alpha.


  In conclusion, Zumba Toning has an effect on muscular endurance of detrained athletes. The researchers would like to recommend Zumba Toning to athletes, coaches, gym instructors, and Physical Therapist for increasing muscular endurance. Further studies are suggested to consider adding more weights, implementing the research shorter than four (4) weeks and measuring other variables like flexibility, balance, or strength among detrained athletes to determine other benefits of Zumba Toning.
