Antibacterial effect of Bougainvillea glabra (bougainvillea) leaf extract on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668.

  This study aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of Bougainvillea glabra (Bougainvillea) leaf extract on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668. The study utilized the randomized controlled, single blind trial design. The study was conducted in the Research Laboratory of the College of Medicine and the laboratory of College of Allied Medical Sciences at Cebu Doctors' University. Twenty-two Mueller Hinton agar plates were used, wherein one disk for each group, Group A - Bougainvillea leaf extract, Group B - 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate, and Group C - autoclaved disks without treatment, were placed together in one plate. The Kirby-Bauer Disk Diffusion Method was used to measure the Zone of Inhibition in order to determine if the groups were able to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

  On the 24th hour of incubation, only four (4) disks out of 22 had a zone of inhibition for the Bougainvillea leaf extract. On the other hand, the zone of inhibition of 0.12% Chlorhexidine gluconate had a mean of 13.53mm on the 24th hour. There was no statistical test carried out since only four (4) disks treated with Bougainvillea leaf extract showed zone of inhibition and none from the negative control (untreated group) showed zone of inhibition.

  Based on the findings, the researchers concluded that Bougainvillea glabra (Bougainvillea) leaf extract did not have an antibacterial effect on Streptococcus mutans ATCC 35668. Hence, the researchers would like to recommend a study utilizing quantitative analysis, a method of extraction using Soxhlet apparatus, a freshly-prepared extract, and a study with a different species of Bougainvillea.
