The aim of this study is to determine the significant relationship between the perceived severity of depression and the level of work readiness among individuals with a history of drug abuse. The results and data of this study will be used as a basis for a proposed occupational therapy program. A descriptive correlational research design was utilized in conducting this study. With the use of a convenience sampling method, one hundred eleven (111) respondents from four different drug rehabilitation facilities in Cebu City namely the Family and Recovery Management (FARM), the Help and Upliftment Guidance to Recovery (HUG), 180 Degrees Rehabilitation and the Journey to Recovery (JTR) were used. The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale was used to measure the perceived severity of depression and the Modified Work Readiness Assessment was used to measure the level of work readiness.

Results of the study showed that majority of the respondents had normal perceived severity of depressive symptoms with a percentage of 78.4%. Less than half of the population was distributed among the three other ranges: 14.4% were mildly depressed, 3.6% were moderately and 3.6% were severely depressed. For the level of work readiness, majority of the population belong to the somewhat ready range with a percentage of 51.4% and the rest belong to the work-ready range with a percentage of 48.6%. No respondent belonged to the not ready range. Using the Chi-square test of association, the initial results showed more than 20% have expected value less than five (5) which violates the assumption of the Chi-square association. To remedy this, the severity of perceived depression has been collapsed into two (2) levels: normal and depressed. With this, results showed that severity of depression is significantly associated with the level of work readiness x2(1)=4.652, p=.031.

This study concluded that there was a significant relationship between the level of work readiness and the perceived severity of depression. It was recommended that the respondents should participate in the proposed program to be able to improve their level of work readiness and decrease their perceived severity of depression. The rehabilitation facilities were also recommended to hire  occupational therapists to implement the program more effectively. Also, the rehabilitation facilities were recommended to read through the research as this will serve as the basis of the proposed program. The occupational therapy practitioners could use this study as a basis for their intervention and treatment for drug abusers. The future researchers were recommended to consider other factors that could affect work readiness among drug abusers. Also, the future researchers were recommended to conduct a study that could measure the effectiveness of the proposed occupational therapy program.
