Hair growing effect of Moringa oleifera (malunggay) leaf extract on testosterone induced alopecia in Rattus rattus domesticus (male albino rats).

        Moringa oleifera (Malunggay)leaves' extract contains flavonoids which is responsible for the inhibition of enzyme 5a-reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone to dihydrotestoterone which clogs up the hair follicle causing it to miniaturize thereby disturbing the normal anagen:telogen ratio of the hair cycle. This study aimed to determine the possibility of malunggay leaves' extract ability to prevent androgenic alopecia on testosterone-induced male albino rats determined by the significant changes in anagen:telogen ratio and hair follicular density of the rats. The study utilized a randomized controlled trial design in determining the effect of the extract on the anagen:telogen ratio and hair follicular density of the research subjects. The research subjects totaled to a number of 24 male albino Rattus rattus domesticus rats with 8 rats assigned to each group; positive control, negative control and experimental group. The extract obtained through the use of soxhlet and rotary evaporator was done at Cebu Doctors' Experimental Research Laboratory. The procedure and treatment of the rats was performed at Cebu Doctors' University Animal Research Laboratory. A skin sample was obtained from each rat after it was euthanized at the end of the experimental period. A skin biopsy was performed by a pathologist to determine the anagen:telogen ratio and hair follicular density. The processing of the specimen and reading of results were done at Cebu Doctors' University Hospital Laboratory.
        The results of the study according to the data collected showed that there was no significant difference favoring the property of the malunggay leaves' extract to prevent androgenic alopecia. According to Dunn's test on the evaluation of A:T ratio, rats treated with malunggay leaf extract had a lower A:T mean of 0.35 compared to a mean of 0.40 on the rats treated with vehicle solution and significantly lower with the mean of 1.86 on the rats treated with finasteride. Furthermore, One-Way ANOVA for the follicular density of Male Albino rats showed no significant difference among the treatment groups. This could be due to the undetermined quantity of flavonoid in malunggay extract leaves and whether or not it would be sufficient enough to prevent the onset of androgenic alopecia.
        Thus, Moringa oleifera leaf extract does not help prevent the onset of androgenic alopecia on testosterone-induced male albino rats on the basis of the results of this research: 1.) To quantitate optimal amounts of flavonoids to promote hair growth. 2.) To further enhance the methods used for administrating the malunggay leaf extract for the optimal hair growing effect. 3.) Perform a 5-alpha-reductase inhibition test to determine the efficiency of malunggay extract to prevent the formation of dihydrotestosterone.
