Abstract
This study aimed to determine the relationship between the level of self-esteem and frequency of drug relapses among drug dependents in a community-based outpatient treatment and aftercare program of Talisay City. The study included 35 respondents, which was the complete enumeration of the program. Self-esteem was measured by the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (∝ = 0.875) and the frequency of drug relapses was obtained through the facility's patient record.
Results showed that of the 35 respondents, 3 (8.6%) attained an elementary school level education, 7 (20.0%) high school, and 25 (71.4%) college. Twenty-eight (80.0%) of the respondents were employed and 7 (20.0%) were unemployed. The majority of the respondents (29, 82.9%) are in the long-term duration of stay (more than 6 months), 3 (8.6%) of the respondents are in the short-term (1-3 months), and another 3 (8.6%) are in the medium-term (3 months, 1 day-6 months). Nearly all of the respondents (33, 94.3%) are in the drug dependency stage and only 2 (5.7%) fall under the risky use stage. The majority of the respondents had a moderate level of self-esteem (24, 68.6%), 7 (20.0%) of the respondents showed to have a low level of self-esteem, and the remaining 4 (11.4%) had a high-level self-esteem. Six (17.1%) of the respondents experienced a relapse in the past 6 months with the average relapse frequency of 2.83 (±1.94). The Spearman rho coefficient showed that there is a negative weak relationship between level of self-esteem and the frequency of drug use (rs=-. 365).
Such data findings suggest that self-esteem does not exclusively predict relapses due to the influence of the other internal and external factors that are in interplay in the recovery process. In lieu of this conclusion, the researchers recommend the need for holistic care during the rehabilitation period to generate lasting behavioral changes, whilst incorporating self-esteem promotion activities in rehabilitation to prevent relapse.
