This study aimed to make a descriptive-comparative analysis on the social competence of children with hearing impairment (HI) (N=82) and their typically hearing counterparts (n=287). The participants of the study consisted of students aged 6-12 years old enrolled in the selected public schools in Cebu City. The data was gathered through the modified version of the Walker-McConnell Scale of Social Competence and School Adjustment by Scott R. McConnell and Hill M. Walker. The respective teacher of the students were given a 43-item questionnaire covering 3 subscales namely: Teacher-Preferred Social Behavior, Peer-Preferred Social Behavior, and School Adjustment. It is a 5-point likert type scale consisting of specific social skills that teachers can observe in the classroom setting.

The researchers received and analysed a total of 369 responses. Children with HI garnered a median score of 49.0 and a range score of 20.0 - 73.0 under the teacher-preferred subscale. A median score of 55.0 and a range score of 20.0 - 80.0 in the peer-preferred subscale. Lastly, a median score of 31.0 and a range score of 13.0 - 50.0 was garnered in the school adjustment subscale. In contrast, the children with typical hearing garnered a median score of 58.0 in the teacher-preferred subscale, 65.0 in the peer-preferred subscale, and 38.0 in the school adjustment subscale. They have a range score of 29.0 - 80.0, 33.0 - 85.0 and 13.0 - 50, respectively. After the median scores of each subscale was compared to the comparison group, it was found that there is a significant difference between the two population in terms of their social competence (p < .001).

The researchers concluded that children with HI exhibit lower social competence in all three subscales (i.e. Teacher-Preferred, Peer-Preferred, and School Adjustment). The researchers determined a list of specific social skills that must be target for intervention. The researchers recommended to target the determined social skills for intervention, advocate for awareness of the effects of hearing impairment, and professional collaboration. In the interest of future studies, it is recommended to perform a correlation of the three subscales, triangulating the social skills, and perform an in-depth item by item analysis of the social skills.
