Abstract
This study was done to determine the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract from the leaves of Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. (Jackfruit) using randomized controlled trial. The study was conducted in the Animal Research Laboratory, Cebu Doctors‟ University, Mandaue City. We utilized 30 male albino mice by randomly grouping them into their assigned treatment, which was the test solution group, negative control group, and the positive control group. The test subjects were healthy male Mus musculus (albino mice) that were acclimatized for two weeks prior to experimentation period. All the test animals were administered subcutaneously with carrageenan solution to induce inflammation. Each mouse was given a single dose after measuring its right hind paw inflammation. The mice assigned to the experimental group were given the solution from the Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. (Jackfruit) leaves, those assigned to the positive control group were given Ponstan suspension, and those assigned in negative control group distilled water. After an hour, the inflammation was measured and for the other following hours in a span for 6 hours.
The right hind paw sizes of all thirty male albino mice varied before and after induction of inflammation. The positive group which was administered with Ponstan showed the highest mean difference in the paw size, as next to it was the experimental group in which the Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. (Jackfruit) leaves extract was administered, and the least among the three was the negative control which was administered with distilled water, that was to determine the natural healing ability of the test animals.
We concluded that the anti-inflammatory effect of the flavonoid which was extracted from Jackfruit leaves and administered to the carrageenan-induced male albino mice is comparable to the effect of Mefenamic Acid (Ponstan). The researchers would recommend to have an extensive study to determine the specific flavonoid responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect of jackfruit extract, a study on the toxicity level of the Jackfruit leaves extract, study on its pregnancy safety and its‟ therapeutic index, and a research on its pharmacodynamics and further pharmacokinetics.
