Antimicrobial effect of unripe mango (Mangifera indica) peel extract on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract

          This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial effect of unripe mango (Mangifera indica) peel extract on  Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This experimental study utilized a randomized controlled trial design and was conducted at Cebu Doctors' University Medical Technology Laboratory Room 404. The test was carried out against the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus using agar-well diffusion method, wherein Mueller-Hinton agar plates inoculated with the test organisms were aseptically punched to obtain wells with a uniform diameter of 6mm. The experimental group was comprised of twenty-seven (27) wells that were filled with the unripe mango peel extract, while those wells filled with ethanol consisted the negative control group. Penicillin and Ampicillin disks were utilized as positive controls for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively. Single-blind method was employed during the data collection to prevent any possible bias.The average diameter of the zone of inhibition of the three (3) readers were used in the analysis. Correlation coefficients of the ZOI among the readers were from .993 to .994 for Escherichia coli, and from .800 to .856 for Staphylococcus aureus.



          Nonparametric Mann-Whitney test was used to determine the significant difference of the Zone of inhibition of Escherichia coli between unripe mango peel extract and ampicillin. Results revealed that the zone of inhibition of the treatment groups were not the same at .05 level of significance, U = .000 and p < .05. Unripe mango peel extract (Median = 9.50) had significantly smaller diameter zone of inhibition compared with ampicillin (Median = 22.67). Nonparametric Mann-Whitney test was also used to determine the significant difference of the Zone of inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus between unripe mango peel extract and Penicillin. It was also revealed that the results were not the same at .05 level of significance, U = 3.000 and p <.05. Unripe mango peel extract (Median = 28.0 ) treatment group had significantly smaller diameter of zone of inhibition compared with penicillin ( Median = 29.67 ) treatment group.


        Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the unripe mango peel extract was ineffective in inhibiting the growth of the test organisms despite being able to produce zones of inhibition since these ZOIs were interpreted as resistant and were not comparable to those of the positive controls.
