Hypoglycemic effect of Jasminum sambac (Sampaguita) leaf extract on the blood glucose level of dexamethasone-induced Mus musculus (albino mice).

Abstract

          This study aimed to determine the hypoglycemic effect of Sampaguita Leaf Extract (Jasminum sambac) on the blood glucose level of Dexamethasone-Induced Albino Mice (Mus musculus). This is an experimental study that utilized the randomized controlled trial in evaluating the effects of Sampaguita Leaf Extract (Jasminum sambac) on the blood glucose level of Dexamethasone-induced albino mice. The study utilized sixteen (16) healthy male albino mice weighing 20 to 30g with normal blood glucose levels within 60-130mg/dl and with no other abnormalities. The albino mice were acclimatized for a period of fourteen (14) days and baseline glucose levels were determined on the fifteenth day. After the acclimatization period, the mice were injected intraperitoneally with 1 mg/kg of Dexamethasone for seven (7) days to increase the blood glucose level to above 130 mg/dl. After injection of dexamethasone, the subjects were assigned randomly into two groups, with eight (8) mice per group: the positive control group and the experimental group of 100% concentration of Sampaguita leaf extract. The subjects were given treatment for seven (7) days. Blood extraction was done after the 7th day of treatment.
          The albino mice treated with 100% Sampaguita leaf extract revealed a mean blood glucose (mg/dl) of 71.75±29.23 on the 8th day. While the metformin group showed a mean blood glucose of 76.63±11.03. Both post-treatment blood glucose levels are still within the normal range. Independent t-test revealed that there was no significant difference in the blood glucose levels (mg/dl) between the Sampaguita extract and metformin groups at 0.05 level of significance on the 8th day of post-treatment, t(14) = -.441 and p > .05. This means that post-treatment blood glucose levels of albino mice were comparable between the 100% Sampaguita leaf extract and metformin.
          Based on findings of the study, the 100% Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) leaf extract possesses hypoglycemic properties comparable to metformin on the blood glucose levels of dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemic albino mice. The researchers would like to recommend to utilize different concentrations of Sampaguita leaf extracts and determine their effects on the blood glucose level.
