Hypoglycemic effect of Swietenia macrophylla (mahogany) fruit seed extract on dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemic Mus musculus (albino mice).

        This study aimed to determine the hypoglycemic effect of Mahogany Fruit Seed Extract (Swietenia macrophylla) on the blood glucose levels of Dexamethasone-Induced Albino Mice (Mus musculus). This is an experimental study that utilized the randomized controlled trial in evaluating the effects of Mahogany Fruit Seed Extract (Swietenia macrophylla) on the blood glucose levels of Dexamethasone-induced albino mice. The study utilized sixteen (16) healthy male albino mice weighing 19-29 grams with normal blood glucose levels within 60-130mg/dl and with no other abnormalities. The albino mice were acclimatized for a period of fourteen (14) days and baseline glucose levels were determined on the eighth & fifteenth day. After the acclimatization period, the mice were injected intramuscularly with a dosage of1 mg/kg of Dexamethasone for seven (7) days to increase the blood glucose level of more than 130 mg/dL to achieve hyperglycemia. After hyperglycemic induction with dexamethasone, the subjects were assigned randomly by using Excel into two groups, with eight (8) mice per group: the positive control (Glibenclamide) group and the experimental group of 100% concentration of Mahogany fruit seed extract. The subjects were given treatment for fifteen (15) days. Blood extraction were done on the 8th and 15th day of treatment.
        The albino mice treated with 100% Mahogany Fruit Seed Extract revealed a mean blood glucose level of (mg/dl) of 130.14 ± 9.74 on the 8th day and 103.86 ± 17.39 on the 15th day. While the Glibenclamide (positive control) group showed a mean blood glucose level of 133.25 ± 9.22 on the 8th day and 115.25 ± 14.44 on the 15th day. Independent t-test revealed that there was no significant difference in the blood glucose levels (mg/dl) among the Mahogany Fruit SeedExtract and Glibenclamide group at 0.05 level of significance, t(13) = -.634 and p > .05. Likewise, Independent t-test revealed that 15th day post treatment blood glucose levels (mg/dL) of the white albino mice in the mahogany fruit seed extract (Mean = 103.86) and glibenclamide (Mean = 115.25) treatment groups had the same blood glucose levels at 15th day post-treatment.
        Based on the study, the 100% Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) fruit seed extract possesses hypoglycemic properties on the blood glucose of dexamethasone-induced hyperglycemic albino mice.
