The influence of social fear on the level of self-efficacy among first year students of Cebu Doctors' University.

     This study aims to investigate the influence of social fear on the level of self-efficacy among first year students of Cebu Doctors' University for Academic Year 2015-2016. The study was conducted at Cebu Doctors' University with the population of 542 first year respondents. The study made use of Descriptive Correlational Survey Research Design to investigate the influence of the variable and stratified random sampling method was used to gather data required for the study. The study used two (2) standardized research tools, namely: Social Fear Scale (SFS) and Self-Efficacy Scale (SES). The Social Fear Scale (SFS) was developed by Mark L. Raulin and Jennifer L. Wee which measures the particular type of social fear of the person. The Self-Efficacy Scale was developed by Mark Sherer and James E. Maddux which designed to measure general expectation of self-efficacy that are not tied up to specific situations or behavior a person.

     Based on the findings, majority of the respondents scored low in the level of social fear with a percentage of 56% (n=304) and 37% (n=199) of the respondents had a moderate level of social fear while minority of the respondents scored high in the level of of social fear with a percentage of 7% (n=39). Results also show that majority of the respondents had a moderate level of self efficacy with a percentage of 77% (n=420) and 22% (n=119) of the respondents had a high of level of self efficacy while minority of the respondents scored low in the level of self efficacy with a percentage of 1% (n=3). The calculated p-value of -0.072 indicated that there is a weak negative correlation between social fear and self efficacy. Thus, there is no significant influence of social fear on the level of self efficacy among first year students of Cebu Doctors' University for the academic year 2015-2016.

    Based on the findings of the study, the researchers have concluded that low level of social fear prevailed among the respondents and a moderate level of self efficacy predominated among the respondents. The computed p-value of -0.072 indicated that there is no significant influence of social fear on the level of self efficacy of the students. From the given results, the researchers would recommend the Guidance Office to develop a social fear and self efficacy related programs to students in order to limits the power of negative thoughts and help them be motivated and gain confident on their studies. It is highly recommended for the teachers and professors to create activities every meeting or once in a week to maintain students' confidence on their abilities and their motivation towards their performance. Orientations are also recommended to the parents by the School Administrators on the importance of having a good relationship within the family to increase their child's self-esteem and orient them on the importance of their function as parents and how it influences their child's level of social fear.
