Abstract
The risk of low vision in Metro Cebu were quite pronounced in the recent statistics. Since the numbers are increasing, optometrists should be more competent and knowledgeable about these services. Thus, a descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in order to determine the level of awareness on low vision services of optometrists in Metro Cebu. A researcher-made questionnaire was administered among one hundred six (106) practicing optometrists in Metro Cebu. The results were gathered and interpreted as to high or low level of awareness using IBM SPSS Version 22.
The results showed that most of the respondents were aged 36-55 years old (middle adults) accounting to 53 or 50%, female (87 or 82.1%), employed (70 or 66%), practiced in malls (57 or 53.8%), practicing for >15 years (48 or 45.39%) and attended less than 10 seminars (63 or 59.4%). According to the level of awareness on low vision services, the practicing optometrists in Metro Cebu have a high level of awareness. High level of awareness was found in young adults (18 - 35 years old) with 97.1%; males 94.7%; private practice 96.6%; optometrists who worked in academe, government/charity, hospitals, and academe/hospitals 100%; practicing for less than 6 years 96.7%; and attended more than 35 seminars with 100%. Majority showed lower level of awareness in low vision management (91 or 85.8%) and examination (88 or 83%) as compared to the overall awareness.
It was concluded that majority showed lower level of awareness in low vision management and examination as compared to the overall awareness on low vision services. For future studies, the researchers would like to recommend to conduct the same study in other metropolitan areas with larger population and among the general public. Also, a bigger sample size is recommended
