A cross-sectional study on perceived barriers and benefits of exercise engagement among senior citizens of Cebu City in the year 2018.

Abstract

   The purpose of this study was to determine the perceived barrier and benefits of exercise among senior citizen in terms of gender, age, exercise engagement and frequency of exercise engagement. The study involved 191 senior citizen ages from 60 and above. This was conducted within the plaza vicinity of Cebu City Hall. The tool utilized for the study was the Exercise Barriers/Benefits Scale (EBBS) authored by Karen Sechrist PhD, RN, FAAN.


   Out of 191 senior citizen respondents, 110 females composed the majority of the population with a percentage score of 57.6%. The remaining 81 male respondents only correspond to 42.4% of the total population. Regarding age, 129 out of 191 respondents (67.5%) fell under the classification of young old, while 62 (32.5%) senior citizen respondents fell under middle old. With regards to exercise engagement, majority of the respondents engage in exercise accounting to 135 (70.7%), whereas 56 (29.3%) do not. In frequency of exercise engagement, the overall results show that majority of the respondents meet the required number of days per week. The highest perceived barrier of exercise engagement among senior citizens is the Fatigue domain while the highest perceived benefit is the Psychosocial domain. In comparing the perceived barriers of exercise engagement among senior citizens, there is a significant difference in terms of exercise engagement and frequency of exercise. On the other hand, in the perceived benefits of exercise engagement, there is a significant difference in terms of age and exercise engagement.


   The perceived benefit differs across age in the body characteristics and physical performance domains. It also differs across exercise engagement in the psychosocial and social interaction domains. The perceived barrier in the fatigue and facility obstacle domains differs across exercise engagement and exercise frequency respectively. Based on the findings, the researchers would like to recommend the following: for the health promoters such as physical therapists and other relevant government bodies (e.g. OSCA, DOH) to develop a program that highlights the benefits of exercise engagement, as well as address the barriers that would demotivate or hinder senior citizens in exercise participation.
