Cross-sectional study of the level of physical activity and demographic factors among college students of Cebu Doctors' University.

Abstract

  Physical activity is vital in a person's daily routine. It is not only limited to sports or exercise but household chores that require bodily movements that require our muscles to use up energy. Physical activity is classified into low, moderate and vigorous intensity, all of which has its own different effects on the human body. This study aimed to make a cross-sectional analysis of the level of physical activity across the demographic factors of the students of Cebu Doctors' University.


  The study used undergraduate students (n=1036) of Cebu Doctors' University. The data acquired for the demographic factors revealed that majority of the respondents are in the later adolescence stage (89.7%) and are females (64.3%) while a higher percentage of respondents were from the Physical Therapy (19.8%). Level of physical activity was determined using IPAQ-SF (International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Form), and results showed that a higher percentage of the respondents were categorized under moderate levels of physical activity with a percentage of 47.4% (n=491) followed by high level of physical activity with 40.9 % (n=424) and lastly, low with only 11.7% (n=121). Level of physical activity (PA) was then compared across the demographic factors and results showed a significant difference in the level of physical activity across degree programs (p<.001) and year levels (p<.05). This means that the level of physical activity differed among the students from the different degree programs and year levels. Time spent sitting was also compared across the demographic factors that were gathered. Age and gender showed a p value of 0.289 and 0.426 respectively, indicating both demographic factors have no significant difference. This means that the time spent sitting did not differ across different age groups and gender. Meanwhile, results for degree program and year level revealed a p value of 0.00 and 0.00 respectively which means that there was a significant difference in the level of PA across this two demographic factors indicating that the time spent sitting among students from different degree programs and year levels differed.


  The level of physical activity and time spent sitting varied across degree program and year level among college students. With this, the researchers would like to recommend that students improve their level of physical activity through activities such as walking, sports or even as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevators.
