Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

General Objective

To evaluate the effect of CM glucan as an adjunct on GINA 2017 recommendation step up treatment of asthma among adult asthmatic patients ages 18 and above with partly controlled or uncontrolled (ACT score < 20) in improving the ACT score and FEV1.

Specific Objectives

To compare the mean increase of ACT score in partly controlled or uncontrolled

(ACT score < 20) adult asthmatic patients treated with step up treatment plus placebo versus step up treatment plus CM glucan at first visit and after 4 weeks, 8 weeks of treatment

To compare the mean increase of FEV1 in partly controlled or uncontrolled (ACT

score < 20) adult asthmatic patients treated with step up treatment plus placebo versus step up treatment plus CM glucan at first visit and after 4 weeks, 8 weeks of treatment

DESIGN: A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study.

PATIENTS/SUBJECT SELECTION: 80 Asthmatic Patients from the DLSUMC OPD Department.

INTERVENTION: All 80 subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups (40 subjects each): treatment group and control group. All 40 subjects in the treatment group were given CM glucan capsules.

OUTCOME MEASURES: ACT score and %FEV1 post-bronchodilator were assessed at the 1st visit, 4th week follow up, and 8th week follow up visits.

RESULTS: There was noted improvement on the asthma symptoms on both treatment groups based on the Asthma Control Test (ACT) score and %FEV1 postbronchodilator.

CONCLUSION: The result of the EMANUEL trial showed a trend of improvement among patients on both groups in terms of ACT score and %FEV1 postbronchodilator. However, it was not statistically significant.
