Abstract

The study aimed to determine the different levels of Emotional Intelligence among gender and year level of the college students from second year to fifth year of Cebu Doctors' University for academic year 2016-2017. This study was conducted in Cebu Doctors' University to 704 second year to fifth year college students which was determined using the Assessing Emotion Scale by Schutte, Malouff and Bhullar (2009).

The findings of this research study showed that out of 704 respondents zero point seven percent (0.7%) or five (5) respondents have low emotional intelligence, thirty-nine point two percent (39.2%) or two hundred seventy-six (276) have average emotional intelligence and sixty point one (60.1%) or four hundred twenty-three (423) have high emotional intelligence. Thus, majority of the college students of Cebu Doctors' University have high level of emotional intelligence. Based on the findings female respondents have higher mean than male respondents. Independent samples t-test showed that the overall emotional intelligence of the respondents is significantly different between females and males, that is (t (704) = 2.18, p = 0.30). This suggests that gender can affect the level of emotional intelligence. Based on the findings third year respondents have the highest mean which is 125.33, on the other hand, the second year level has the lowest mean which is 121.05 with a standard deviation of 17.65. The result of the data gathered also shows that fourth year level has a mean of 122.79 with a standard deviation of 14.89. Also, fifth year level has a result of a mean which is 124.22 with a standard deviation 13.31. Based on the data presented, emotional intelligence is significantly different across year level, that is (F (704 = 2.95, p = 0.032).

The student researchers have come up with the following conclusions: Majority of the respondents of the study are female and most of them are in third year level. And also majority of the college students in Cebu Doctors' University academic year 2016-2017 have high level of Emotional Intelligence. In socio demographic gender, female has higher emotional intelligence than male and in year level, third year got the highest level of emotional intelligence in comparison to second year, fourth year and fifth year. In line with these conclusions, the student researchers would highly recommend the Guidance Office to have emotional management seminars for those students with low emotional intelligence.
