Abstract

This study, entitled "Relationship Between the Perceived Levels of Acculturative Stress and Social Support Among Foreign Students in Cebu Doctors' University: A Basis for Proposed Program," aimed to explore the relationship between the perceived levels of acculturative stress and social support. A sample size of 233 students was determined, however the respondents that had participated in this study included a total of 200 selected undergraduate foreign students. The research was conducted within the classrooms of Cebu Doctors' University in the presence of both researchers and the mentor. A descriptive correlation research design was utilized, wherein two (2) instruments were administered. These instruments were the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) developed by Dahlem et. al and Acculturative Stress Scale for International Students (ASSIS) developed by Sandhu and Asrabadi.

Upon data analysis, results had shown that out of the two-hundred respondents, majority of those foreign students had experienced low levels of acculturative stress, wherein one-hundred seventy six or 88% composed of that majority. The remaining twenty-four respondents composed of the minority who had displayed high levels of acculturative stress (12%). For the results on the level of social support, one-hundred eighty seven (187) respondents (93.5%) reported high levels of social support, whereas the remaining thirteen respondents (6.5%) experienced low levels of social support. As for the relationship between the two variables, there was a weak negative correlation between the levels of perceived acculturative stress and social support.

In conclusion, although social support plays a role in mediating the levels of acculturative stress the foreign students face, there are other factors that contribute to the stress. In the interest of future studies, the researchers would like to recommend further exploration of other factors that may contribute to the students' low levels of stress, such as source of income, living situation, and the reason why they are taking an undergraduate course in this specific university. The researchers would also like to recommend increasing the scope and inclusion criteria of the participants in this study to include foreign students of other colleges in Cebu in order to obtain larger sample sizes. The outcome measures that were utilized in this study, although reliable, can be further modified and revised in order to specify the source of social support, whether it is within or outside their ethnicity groups.
