The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the brown alga, Sargassum polycystum extract on the blood glucose level of Alloxan-induced hyperglycemic albino mice.
The methods used in this experiment were the following: First, the subjects were induced with Alloxan through intraperitoneal injection. Then the mice were administered with water as negative control, metformin as positive control, and different extract concentrations as the experimental group. This was done through oral gavage. The blood glucose levels of the subjects were measured using a glucometer. Using different levels of concentrations of the extract, blood glucose levels decreased. It doesn't matter whether the concentrations were higher or lower as there is no significant difference between the concentrations. Bonferroni multiple comparisons post-hoc test was used for the between treatment group difference. Based on the data gathered and presented, the results showed that the algae extracts had a lowering effect on the blood glucose level of the albino mice. Blood glucose level results of all concentrations were significantly the same. It had more or less the same effect with the positive control Metformin. The difference though was found out between the experimental group (different concentrations) and the negative control group. As the study has been done, it is established that there was a finding on the decrease of the blood glucose level of Alloxan-induced hyperglycemic albino mice. As a result we would like to recommend the following: to study the toxicity effect of the algae, to do histological study on the pancreas of the mice, and to test the same algae on different test subject or different algae on the same test subjects. Therefore, the algae extract had an effect on the blood glucose level of the albino mice.
