The assessment of calorie and protein adequacy of basketball athletes of Cebu Doctors' University academic year 2016-2017.

   The objective of the study aimed to identify the calorie and protein adequacy of basketball athletes of Cebu Doctors' University enrolled during the academic year 2016-2017. This study utilized a descriptive comparative survey design. The estimated total calorie and protein intake of the Athletes is computed as the total sum of three factors: Basal Energy Expenditure (BEE) of the Harris-Benedict Equation (HBE), 2.) 10% of the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) and 3.) Physical Activity Factor. In determining the calorie and protein intake of the athletes, the average calorie and protein for the two days of the 24-hour food recall was computed and was compared to the estimated calorie and protein. The percent adequacy used are the following; 126% is excessive of the calorie and protein adequacy. The data gathered were used as a basis for information dissemination.

   Based on the data presented, interpreted and analyzed the researchers have found out that the mean age, weight, and height of the basketball athletes is 21.23 years old, 72.14 kg, and 172.85 cm respectively. The mean total calorie intake is 2827.07 while the protein intake is 106.56 g. The mean estimated total energy requirement is 3213.64 kcal and 121.57 g for protein. In terms of caloric adequacy, there are 2 basketball athletes who are inadequate, 8 are suboptimal, 55 adequate, and 1 is excessive.Regarding protein intake, there are 2 basketball players who are considered inadequate, 22 are suboptimal, 36 adequate, and 6 who are excessive. There is significant difference in the average daily calorie intake and in the protein intake of the basketball players.

   Based on the findings, the assessment of the caloric and protein adequacy of basketball athletes of academic year 2016 - 2017 are found out to be adequate in terms of energy and protein intake. The researchers had distributed brochures for disseminating information in the relation of the results of the study and in the interest of future studies, the researchers would like to recommend the following: Future researches will be conducted further to investigate other factors that might cause calorie and protein inadequacy.
