Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effects of Biomechanical Taping (BMT) on Pain Associated with Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and Range of Motion (ROM) among Flag Football Athletes in Cebu Doctors' University. The study was conducted at San Roque Parish Field, Subangdaku, Mandaue City and third (3rd) floor of CDU located on DR. P. V. Larrazabal Jr. Avenue, North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City, Cebu within four (4) days. The study utilized a one-group repeated measures design and was composed of 23 subjects from the Flag football teams from each of the Colleges of CDU, seven (7) females and 16 males, with no physical activity or strength training for the past two (2) weeks. The researchers used a Wagner Algometer to assess pain associated with DOMS and goniometer to assess the ROM of the subjects.
The baseline, pretest, immediate effect, after 24 hours and 48 hours scores for Pain Associated with Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and Range of Motion (ROM) were measured and recorded. The measurements were obtained from the left and right Quadriceps Femoris muscle and knee joint. The Pretest score of Pain Associated with DOMS had a mean of 7.35±2.71 (left) and 7.74±2.88 (right). The Pretest scores from ROM had a mean of 132.3°±7.35° (left) and 132.13°±6.76° (right). One-way Repeated-measure ANOVA with Greenhouse-Geisser and Bonferroni Multiple Comparisons Tests were used. A comparison was drawn between the pretest scores and the scores for immediate had a mean of 7.64±3 (left) and 7.89±3.24 (right). The immediate effect scores for ROM had a mean of 134.04°±2.64° (left) and 133.91°±3.68° (right). The after 24 hours scores of Pain Associated with DOMS had a mean of 8.93±2.63 (left) and 9±2.64 (right). The after 24 hours scores for ROM had a mean of 135° (left) and 135° (right). The after 48 hours scores of Pain Associated with DOMS had a mean of 9.53±2.54 (left) and 9.62±2.8 (right). The after 48 hours scores for ROM had a mean of 135±0 (left) 134.78±1.04 (right).
Biomechanical Taping had a significant effect on pain associated with DOMS after 48 hours. But it has no significant effect immediately and 24 hours after application. On the other hand, BMT had no significant effect on ROM immediately after application, 24 hours and 48 hours after. Researchers recommend to athletes that BMT can be used after to relieve pain associated with DOMS. Additionally, for physical therapists to consider BMT as an alternative treatment to musculoskeletal conditions. For future researchers, to consider further investigation on the effect of BMT on DOMS among non-athletic individuals and to utilize a randomized controlled trial design to further investigate the influence of BMT over placebo effect and other taping methods.
