Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This aimed to determine the effect of dried organic Citrus sinensis peel, albedo side on the tooth shade of the labial surface of tooth #13 to #23 on 30 selected Dentistry proper students of Cebu Doctors' University A.Y. 2013-2014.


DESIGN: This was utilized as an experimental design to determine the effect of the albedo side of Citrus sinensis on the tooth shade of the labial surfaces of tooth #13 to #23.


SETTING: The procedure was performed at the Dental Infirmary of Cebu Doctors' University, North Reclamation area, Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines.


SUBJECTS: This utilized 30 Dentistry I proper students of Cebu Doctors' University, male or female, aged 15-30 years old, have a complete set of maxillary anterior teeth (tooth #13-23), with good oral hygiene (determined by oral examination), with intact, vital, unbleached teeth #13-23, with natural tooth shades of A2 ,A3, A3.5, A4, not using any toothpaste with bleaching or whitening effect and not undergoing orthodontic treatment.


PROCEDURE: Upon the approval by the Dean and Bioethics committee, filling up questionnaires, oral examinations, signing of informed consents and oral prophylaxis were done. Initial shades of the tooth #13-23 were obtained. The Citrus sinensis peelings were dried using the Excalibur Dehydrator. A week after, group A was asked to brush their teeth with whitening toothpaste while group B was asked to brush their teeth with non-fluoridated toothpaste. The peelings were cut and applied on the labial surfaces of tooth #13-23. This was done thrice a week for 2 weeks with one-day interval. After the two weeks, the tooth shades were again obtained.


RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS: The 3M shade guide was used by the researchers to determine the shades of the teeth. The researchers used a record sheet that to record observations.


RESULTS: The results of the paired T-test for the significant change in the tooth shades of tooth #13-23 before and after the use of the whitening toothpaste showed that the p-value for teeth #21 and 22 is 0.002. Teeth #13 and 23 is 0.000, tooth #11 is 0.001, and tooth #12 is 0.003 while the Citrus sinensis showed that the p-value from tooth #13-23 is 0.000. The null hypothesis for both were rejected and therefore there was a significant change.


The Independent T-test showed no significant difference in the tooth shades of tooth #11,12,21, and 22 after the application of whitening toothpaste versus the Citrus sinensis based on the following p values: tooth #11 (p=0.123), tooth #12 (p=0.209), tooth #21 (p=0.067) and tooth #22 (p=0.146). There was a significant difference in the tooth shades of tooth #13 and #23 after the application of whitening toothpaste versus the Citrus sinensis based on the following p values: tooth #13 (p=0.011) and tooth #23 (p=0.007).


CONCLUSION: The albedo side of the Citrus sinensis peelings and whitening toothpaste were effective in whitening tooth no. 11, 12, 21 and 22 from white to more white and tooth no. 13 and 23 from less white to white. There was no significant difference in the tooth shades of tooth #11, 12, 21, and 22 while there was a significant difference in the tooth shades of tooth #13 and #23 after the application of whitening toothpaste versus the Citrus sinensis in the 30 selected Dentistry proper students of Cebu Doctors' University A.Y 2013-2014.
