Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the relationship between Parental Nurturance and Dispositional Optimism among selected Nursing Students of Cebu Doctors' University: As Basis for a Proposed Guideline to Improve Positive Outlook. The study utilized a descriptive correlational method in order to arrive at definite facts. There were 94 samples out of 107 level I and II students of Cebu Doctors' University College of Nursing, who enrolled in the academic year of 2014-2015. Stratified Simple random Sampling followed to ensure that the population was represented adequately. The study was conducted at Room 324 located on the third floor of Cebu Doctors' University, situated in the North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City. This study utilized two modified tools, namely, Parental Nurturance Scale and Generalized Expectancy For Success Scale to determine the students' profiles.

The profiles of the respondents were outlined in the study which includes their gender, age, ordinal position, year level, parental employment, and parental educational attainment. The respondents' Parental Nurturance had an average score of 92.45 and Maternal Parental Nurturance had an average score of 96.37, which was interpreted, as High Level of Parental Nurturance. The respondents' profile in terms of Dispositional Optimism showed an average score of 94.4681, which was interpreted, as High Level of Dispositional Optimism. Based on the results of the regression analysis a correlation coefficient of 0.132 and a p-value of 0.700 for Father Parental Nurturance and a p-value of 0.210 for Mother Parental Nurturance between Dispositional optimism showed that there is no significant relationship between Parental Nurturance and Dispositional Optimism.

The results meant that there is no correlation between Parental Nurturance and Dispositional Optimism. As an output of the study, a set of proposed guidelines were made based on the outcome of the study to improve the Positive Outlook of selected students. Based on the findings, the researchers would like to recommend further studies about the same topic with more population and a wider scope of variables, and also the researchers to enhance dispositional optimism, which will enable them to effectively use the different measures given out to them.
