Abstract

BACKGROUND: Studies have described approaches to combat overweight and obesity. No local study has explored the effectiveness of weight loss programs among overweight and obese adult Filipinos.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of a hospital-based multidisciplinary weight management program on overweight and obese adult Filipinos.

METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on overweight and obese adult Filipinos enrolled at the Weight Management Center of St. Luke's Medical Center from January 2010 to December 2014. Demographic data were retrieved from medical records. Change in weight, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and percent weight loss, were computed.

RESULTS: Ninety six overweight and obese adult patients were included. Mean weight loss after 12 weeks was 5.93±4.49kg, with mean percent change of 6.2% (P=<0.0001). Body mass index decreased by 6%, with mean change of 2.17±1.49kg/m2 (P= <0.0001). Systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreased with mean of 5.83mmHg, P=

CONCLUSION: The multidisciplinary weight management program is effective in achieving weight loss and reducing systolic and diastolic pressures among overweight and obese adult Filipinos.
