Abstract

The study entitled "The Influence of the Perceived Relationship of Attachment Style and Romantic Jealousy Tendencies on Emotion Regulation Among Selected College of Arts and Sciences Students of Cebu Doctors' University" was about the influence of the perceived relationship of attachment style and romantic jealousy tendencies on emotion regulation among selected student of the College of Arts And Sciences of Cebu Doctors' University for the Academic Year 2014-2015. The study's objective was to determine how the relationship between attachment style and the tendencies of becoming romantically jealous influences emotion regulation among three hundred and ninety-nine (399) College of Arts and Sciences students who are currently in a boy-girl relationship. Furthermore, the results of this study served as a supplementation to a possible intervention program. The researchers also conducted an informal interview to further enhance the qualitative nature of this study.

The results illustrated the prominence of participants identified holding a fearful attachment style with one hundred nine (27%) in total followed by preoccupied attachment style with one hundred two (26%), secure attachment style with ninety-four (24%), and dismissive attachment style with ninety-four (24%). The attachment style was defined as an emotional bond between individuals often distinguished by the need of closeness and the fear of being separated with individuals one have a bond with. The Experience of Close Relationship-Revised Scale by Chris R. Fraley was utilized in the study. Among the four attachment styles, the dominant romantic jealousy tendency proved to be emotional jealousy with a total of three hundred thirty-three (82%). Similar to the results of the perceived relationship of attachment style and romantic jealousy tendencies, results showed that the respondents was prominently possessing cognitive reappraisal as a way to regulate emotion with a total of two hundred sixty-one (65%) compared to expressive suppression with one hundred thirty-four respondents (35%). The Multidimensional Jealousy Scale by Susan Pffeifer and Dr. Paul Wong and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire by Gross and John was utilized in the study. Majority of the respondents indicated a preoccupied attachment style, dominant emotional jealousy and cognitive reappraisal.

As seen in the outcomes of the study, it was recommended that the study may be conducted among all the students of Cebu Doctors' University. Also, a multivariate study may also be conducted with gender, length of relationship, quality of relationship, and nationality of respondents as one of the variables. It is also suggested that a Filipino version of the scales can be used for future researches.
