Abstract

Design: This study utilized the non-experimental, survey design.


 


Setting: This study was conducted at Cebu Doctors' University which consists of two campuses, the main and Talamban campus. The former accommodated the level 1 and level 3 nursing students, and the latter accommodated the level 2 nursing students;


 


Respondents: This study involved 150 students of Cebu Doctors' University College of Nursing. The research respondents were selected through non-probability purposive sampling and were based on the following inclusion criteria: the research respondents must be a student who is currently enrolled in the Cebu Doctors' University College of Nursing, 1st semester of academic year 2006-2007; he of she must be 16-19 years of age; must have had a t least 3 drinking sessions within the beginning of the 1st semester academic year 2006-2007 until the actual answering of the questionnaire. Excluded here were students withing the year levels stated but did not fall under the age requirement; those who had not drank or had drank alcoholic beverage in less than 3 sessions since the start of the first semester of the given academic year; level 4 students; and those who participated in the pretest of the drinking motives questionnaire.


 


Procedures: A letter was sent to the Dean of Cebu Doctors' University; College of Nursing asking permission to conduct a research study in the Main and Talamban campus and include qualified Nursing students as research respondents. The research study was then sent to the ethics committee for ethical approval. Upon the approval of the Dean and ethics committee, the student researchers conducted a pretest using the modified Drinking Motives Questionnaire. During the actual data gathering, the researchers asked permission from the teacher-in-charge to conduct the study. After granted permission, the researchers stated the purpose of the study. The students were informed about the inclusion criteria. those who met the criteria were given the Drinking Motive Questionnaires for them to answer. They were given a clear and concise instruction and 20 minutes to answer the questionnaire. the researchers stayed with the respondents util they finished answering. Questions and clarifications were entertained throughout the procedure. Questionnaires were retrieved immediately thereafter. The data were collected, tabulated, computed, analyzed, reviewed and interpreted for accuracy and completeness.


 


Results: Majority of the respondents' profile in terms of age, sex, and year level were as follows: 17 years old, females, and level III respectively. The psychosocial factors that influenced the Cebu Doctors' University College of Nursing adolescents to drink alcohol beverage more under Social motives was "Moderate drink= Fun"; under Enhancement motives was "Moderate"; under conformity motives "I will not drink...but should I?" and under coping motives was "I'll try...". The motive that greatly influenced the adolescents to drink alcohol beverage more was social motives.


 


Conclusion: The result of the study shows that majority of the psychosocial factors that influence the Cebu Doctors' University College of Nursing adolescents to drink alcoholic beverage belongs to Social motives.
