The effect of Ipomoea batatas Linn. (sweet potato) root powder on fasting blood sugar level of selected type II diabetic patients in Cebu City: Basis for comprehensive literature on herbal medication.

Abstract

Research Design: This study employed a quasi experimental design.


 


Research Setting: This study was conducted at the respective residences of the research participants within the limits of Cebu City.


 


Procedures/Interventions: The researchers sought permission from the Bioethics Committee and passed a formal letter to the Dean of the Cebu Doctors' University College of Nursing. The sweet potatoes were thinly sliced into approximately 3 to 5 mm, sun dried and ground into powder form.


The researchers chose 9 participants through purposive sampling who have met the inclusion criteria. They have been tested for allergies. With negative findings after 48 hours, fasting blood sugar was measured and was considered as baseline data. The participants were asked to take twenty-five grams of sweet potato powder mixed with one-fourth cup of warm water before breakfast, on an empty stomach. this continued for twenty-one days. On the eight, fifteenth and twenty-second day, fasting blood sugar was taken with the use of a hand-held glucometer. These readings were compared with the baseline data taken on the initial visit to determine the effects of the treatment.


 


Results: Prior to the treatment, the mean fasting blood sugar in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) was 166.33 mg/dl with a standard deviation of 72.07. After 1 week of treatment, the mean fasting blood sugar was 151 mg/dl with a standard deviation of 76.89. After 2 weeks of treatment, the mean fasting blood sugar was 133.44 mg/dl with a standard deviation of 72.65. After 3 weeks of treatment, the mean fasting blood sugar was 123.89 mg/dl with a standard deviation of 50.29. The mean change after 1 week was 15.33 mg/dl, with a p - value


 


Conclusion: Sweet potato powder significantly decreased fasting blood sugar of selected type II diabetic patients in Cebu City after 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks of treatment.
