Expansive open - door laminoplasty with adaption plating for posterior longitudinal ligament ossification.

This is a retrospective study of 10 Expansive Open - Door Laminoplasties with Adaption Plating done by a single surgeon for patients with Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament. Seven of the patients were males and 3 were females. The mean age of the patients 52.6 years. The mean operative time of the, gatieats was 360 minutes. The patients received a mean ofl unit of fresh whole blood and 1.5 units packed red blood cells either intra - or post - operatively. The patients stayed an average of 13. days in the hospital. The average pre - operative Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) Score for cervical myelopathy of the patients was 10.4, while the mean post - operative JOA Score was 15.3. Six of the 9 patients available for follow up returned to work about 3 months post - operatively. The mean recovery rate was 64 percent.The patients claimed they were satisfied with the procedure. This study thus shows that expansive open-door laminoplasty with adaptation plating is a good and safe surgical option for patients with Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament.
