Background. Shivering is an unpleasant and frequent complication in the post-operative period. Apart from its obvious discomfort, post-anesthetic shivering (PAS) may be associated with the risk of several complications. In this prospective, double-blinded randomized study, we evaluated tramadol hydrochloride, compared with meperidine and saline for treating PAS.
Methodology. Sixty adult patients were included in the study. Group 1 (n=20) received meperidine at 0.4mg/kg, Group 2 (n=20) received tramadol at 0.5mg/kg, and group 3 received IV saline. The treatment that stopped shivering was considered to be successful.
Results. Compared to saline group, response rates in the meperidine and tramadol groups were more effective. Five minutes after treatment, meperidine and tramadol have respectively and successfully treated PAS in 25 percent and 35 percent of the patients. Difference in response rates between meperidine and tramadol was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Our results show that tramadol has an anti-shivering effect similar to that of meperidine.
Conclusion. We conclude that tramadol may be an alternative to meperidine for treating post-anesthetic shivering.
