Abstract

Purpose: To determine the effect of lid closure on tear flow through the nasolacrimal duct
Materials and methods: The lacrimal system of 7 patients were evaluated using dacryoscintigraphy with eyes open (control phase) and with eyes closed (experimental phase); Dacryoscintigraphy plates were interpreted by a Consultant (Nuclear Medicine) as either obstructed or patent
Results: With eyes open, 13 nasolacrimal systems were read as patent; with eyes closed, all 13 nasolacrimal systems were read as obstructed
Conclusion: Results showed that tear drainage was retarded by lid closure in all subjects.
