Background ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'†â€™ÃÆ'Æ'â€Ã...¡ÃÆ'‚¢ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'‚¬ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢â€Ã...¡Ã‚¬ÃÆ'‚ There were 73 actual cases of resected thymic epithelial tumors from 1976-2004 at the Philippine Heart Center.

Methods and Results ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'†â€™ÃÆ'Æ'â€Ã...¡ÃÆ'‚¢ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'‚¬ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢â€Ã...¡Ã‚¬ÃÆ'‚ Retrospective study was done, however there were only 36 cases included in the study. One independent pathologist (C.D.T.) reviewed these in terms of its histopathological characteristics. The classification was based on the new WHO classification of thymic epithelial tumors (TET) and correlated with the patient's age, sex, presence of myasthenia gravis, tumor size, histologic subtype, and treatment. There were 6 (16.7 percent), 2 (5.5 percent), 8 (22.2 percent), 12 (33.3 percent), 6 (16.7 percent) and 2 (5.5 percent) type A, AB, B1, B2, B3, and C tumors, respectively. Overall mean age of diagnosis was 48 years with a male to female ratio of 0.89:1 (17 male and 19 female). Myasthenia gravis was seen in 8 (22.2 percent) of patients, and mostly in type B2 tumors. Overall mean tumor size was 8.44 cm. Only 12 patients were available for follow-up, 8 (22.2 percent) survived with type A to B3 tumors, 3 (8.3 percent) died due to thymoma related disease with type B2 and C. The rest of the 24 patients were lost to follow-up. Most common presentations include dyspnea (41.7 percent), cough (36.1 percent), myasthenia gravis (22.2 percent), body/extremity weakness (19.4 percent), chest pain (16.6 percent), and weight loss (16.6 percent). There were 6 (16.6 percent) asymptomatic cases discovered only through routine check-up.

Conclusion ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'†â€™ÃÆ'Æ'â€Ã...¡ÃÆ'‚¢ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'‚¬ÃÆ'Æ'Æ’ÃÆ'¢â‚¬Ã...¡ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢â€Ã...¡Ã‚¬ÃÆ'‚ Therefore thymomas have no consistent sexual predilection, mostly seen in adult life and with type B2 thymoma as the most common histologic subtype. The new classification of TET showed a close correlation with prognosis with increasing aggressiveness from A

General objective: 1. To evaluate the new WHO classification of thymic epithelial tumors' clinical and prognostic usefulness in patients with thymoma at Philippine Heart Center.

Specific Objectives:
1. To review and describe the histologic subtypes of thymoma.
2. To describe the clinical characteristics of patients associated with thymoma.
3. To determine the disease-free period from time of surgical intervention and duration from surgery to time of death.
