Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To determine the association of snoring history, obesity, daytime sleepiness with sleep-disordered breathing and its severity using the apnea -hypopnea index (AMI) in patients referred to the Philippine Heart Center Sleep Clinic for polysomnography.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of previous records of polysomnography, Epworth Sleepiness Scale and Sleep Questionnaires at Philippine Heart Center Sleep Clinic from November 2002 to June 2006. Fischer's exact test and Chi-square test of association analysis were done for qualitative data and T-test for quantitative data with the level of significance set at 0.05.

RESULTS: Patients with sleep disordered breathing were predominantly middle aged, obese male. There was a significant association between weight, BMI, neck circumference, snoring frequency and intensity as well as Epworth Sleepiness Scale with sleep disordered breathing (p-value: <0.03). An association was also noted between ESS and snoring history (p-value: <0.004) as well as neck circumference (p-value: <0.01). With regards to severity of sleep disordered breathing however, no significant association was noted with ESS, BMI and neck circumference except for snoring history (p-value: 0).

CONCLUSION: Snoring is significantly associated with sleep disordered breathing and its severity. It is also associate with daytime sleepiness. There was no significant association observed between snoring and obesity. (Author)
